A presidential elections official checks an Afghan woman's registration card and inks her thumb before she is allowed into the voting booth. Every woman who registered to vote in Afghanistan's historic 2004 presidental elections received a card with her name and photograph. Yet given the on-going restrictions faced by many Afghan women, and to ensure that as many women as possible voted, women were not obliged to have their photograph taken.
