On August 20, 2009, an Afghan woman, carrying her baby, votes for her country’s president at a polling station at Nadiria High School in Kabul’s Karte Parwan neighbourhood. This was only the second time in their history that Afghan women went to the polls to vote for a president, yet unfortunately, compared to 2004, overall voter turnout dropped, especially among women. This was largely due to Taliban threats, especially in the south, and the fact that many women's polling stations were closed, in part due to a lack of female election workers.
