In February 2010, Afghan parliamentarian Shinkai Karokhail visits her birthplace, Chinar village, tucked into the mountains at the edge of Kabul province. After speaking with residents about the workings of their government and the need for human rights, villagers emphasized their concerns about separate education classes for older girls, roads, security, and property rights. Trained as a medical doctor, Ms. Karokhail was a founding member and director of the Afghan Women's Educational Centre. Currently chairperson of Afghan women parliamentarians, she advocates to improve the status of Afghan women.
