Shaima Rezayee used to work for HOP, a daily music program at Tolo TV in Kabul. The program's western style attracted a huge following but also raised the ire of conservative clerics who claimed it corrupted Afghan youth. Under pressure from authorities, Tolo TV dismissed Shaima after she received threats. Three months later, at age 24, she was assassinated in her home. Police initially linked Shaima's killing to her broadcasting job. Her mother and neighbours said she was killed by her brother. Investigators later claimed she was killed by an unknown tax collector. As is often the case when young Afghan women die, no one can say for certain what happened to her.
