Masooda Jalal has set important precedents for Afghan women in the political arena. A medical doctor, she served as a delegate to the 2002 Emergency Loya Jirga. Held to form the transitional Afghan government, Ms. Jalal's stance on women and healing the nation garnered her significant percentage of votes in the race for transitional leader. Two years later, she became the first Afghan woman to run for president against Hamid Karzai. Following the elections, she was appointed Minister of Women's Affairs. In this photograph, she is being interviewed by Farida Haris, a journalist with the state broadcaster, Radio and Television Afghanistan.
