Before moving to Canada, Ms. Samad was the television correspondent and Kabul Bureau Chief for Fox News Channel in Afghanistan for nearly three years. Prior to working for Fox News she worked for ABC News in Kabul and New York. During her time there, she became involved in various projects helping to support Afghan women with sustainable income and literacy training. The ArteZan Designs Project founded in Kabul in 2004 is one example where Afghan women are hand-weaving silk shawls for income while receiving daily literacy classes, helping them to learn employable skills and become self-sufficient citizens.

The Artists for Afghanistan Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, was created by Ms. Samad in 2000 with the aim of raising funds for cultural and educational projects in Afghanistan, helping Afghan women and children with literacy, and promoting Afghan arts and crafts. www.artists-for-afghanistan.org

In 1999, Ms. Samad collaborated on a fundraising CD with Grammy-Award winner, George Winston, to help raise awareness about the plight of Afghan women under the oppressive Taliban regime. "Not Forgotten: Songs for the people of Afghanistan" was released in 2000, and was featured in an ABC Prime Time special with Diane Sawyer, and at a special United Nations benefit honoring the work of Secretary General Kofi Annan. http://cdbaby.com/cd/khorshiedmachalle
