Huma Safi was a poet, journalist and broadcaster. In her teens, while the Taliban were in power, she fell in love with her friend Zabih and worked with him to set up a secret school for Afghan girls. In 2004, when her family said she couldn't marry Zabih, Huma committed suicide. She was 21. Huma was Pashtun, and Zabih is Hazara, yet the reason her family opposed the marriage was a matter of religion, not ethnicity: Huma was Sunni and Zabih is Shia. After her death, Zabih created a children's radio program and a library in her name.
