Afghan women hold photos aloft of Farida Tarana, an independent candidate for the 2009 provincial council in Kabul. One of more than 300 women running in Afghanistan's thirty-four provincial council elections – and one of Afghanistan's most famous women -- Ms. Tarana had an easy victory, despite being the victim of intimidation and threats. After performing on Afghan Star, Afghanistan's wildly popular version of American Idol in 2005, as a representative of the province of Herat, Ms. Tarana shot to pop stardom. As an Afghan woman, she says it was hard to become a singer, but even harder to become a politician.
